With so much choice around it can be hard to know where to begin, but we say start with getting an idea of the type and style of bathroom that you'd like. Go and visit some bathroom stores to see the different styles for yourself and take advantage of the free brochures on offer. You can then peruse them at your leisure and make a note of the ones you like.
If you’re not able to get to any stores, then there’s plenty of property magazines that you can buy, that feature different bathroom styles. Make a scrapbook or create a mood board so you can bring together your ideas with images and make notes about what you like and don’t like. For example, ‘Love rose gold taps. ‘Cannot stand white tiles. ‘Designer towel rail is a must. All of this will help when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of choosing your bathroom fixtures and fittings.
We think that choosing tiles is one of the hardest parts of designing a bathroom because there are quite literally thousands to choose from! But, if you’ve created a mood board it’ll come in handy for this task as you can revert back to it and see which colours, and styles float your boat and which ones don’t.
Just remember that choosing the colour of your tiles is like choosing the colour of paint. Darker colours tend to draw a room in making it feel smaller and cosier, whereas lighter colours give the appearance of more room.
If you’ve got a small bathroom but have always wanted trendy black metro tiles, then you could try teaming them with a lighter colour tile for the floor, or a lighter coloured vanity unit, so you can still get the effect you want without turning it into a dark and dingy room. The same goes for a large bathroom; you don’t have to stay away from white if it’s a minimalistic style you’re looking for. But you could try teaming white wall tiles with a patterned floor tile or if that’s not your cup of tea, natural material such as stone, slate, or marble. Or you could add a pop of colour to your shower enclosure by choosing a bright splashback or create a feature wall using bathroom-friendly wallpaper. The choice is yours!
Often overlooked, but crucial to your bathroom design, the correct level of lighting can make all the difference. It’s not just about being able to see yourself in the mirror, it’s about creating the perfect ambiance.
Mirrors with lights, lights with sensors, showers with LED lights, toilets that light up when you sit on them, the list is endless.
LED spotlights are a great choice as they come in bright white, warm white, and colour changing.
Some LED spotlights are dimmable, so you can have soothing low-level mood lighting perfect for when you want to have a long soak in the tub.
How much money you’ve put aside for your bathroom renovation will determine which items you can buy, and which stores you can buy them from. If you do your research and plan your new bathroom well, then you’ll know what figure you’re looking at from the outset and will be more likely to stick to it.
As well as the tiles, flooring, fixtures, and furnishings, you may also need to consider the cost of a bathroom fitter, an electrician to do the wiring and lighting, a plumber (and if there is any pipework that needs to be moved), a floor fitter, and a plasterer if needed. All these can add up and need to be noted in your budget as you don’t want a nasty shock when you look at the final bill.
You may think that you don’t need much storage space in your bathroom, but you’ll be surprised as to how much room shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel take up, not to mention toilet rolls, bath towels, and your first-aid box.
A floating vanity unit with drawers or a free-standing unit with a cupboard will store most of your bathroom essentials.
Closed bathroom cabinets are great for putting toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, perfume, etc without the need for them being on display.
Slimline storage units are perfect if you don’t have much room in your bathroom and they can store a lot of useful bathroom items.
If you'd like to display your bathroom lotions and potions or expensive perfumes, then shelves make a good choice.
Built-up moisture leads to condensation and too much of it can cause unsightly watermarks on your bathroom surfaces, as well as black mould growth that can affect your health.
So, when designing your new bathroom, it’s important to add an extractor fan to the list of items to buy. An extractor fan works by sucking a lot of the moisture out of the air and taking it outside.
Underfloor heating and heated towel rails can also help to reduce moisture build-up by warming the air temperature.
